The following is an excerpt from a recent interview with Peter Beckwith, President and Creative Director
at Mad Rose Media.

What are the biggest lessons you've learned over the past 25 years in the dental marketing space?
What every dentist and orthodontist ought to know is that they own TWO brands…not just one.

Every dental practice has two brands. The professional brand is where the clinical work happens. The personal brand is where the doctor establishes him or herself as a trusted expert in the field. Dentists and orthodontists are very ambitious people. The docs I've seen achieve their career ambitions have invested heavily in both their personal and professional brands.

I've been working with Bill Hang for 25 years. Bill is a pioneer in the profession who has always been willing to push the envelope clinically, share his experience as an educator and invest in his personal and professional brands. He and Debbie (his wife and business manager) have built Face Focused Orthodontics into a highly successful specialized practice. The name Bill Hang is recognized worldwide for cutting edge, airway focused orthodontic education. Bill's investment in his personal brand has greatly benefitted his practice and vice versa.

One of Bill's greatest strengths is self awareness. He knows who he is, what he stands for and where he wants to have an impact.

When docs aren't clear on where they shine clinically and/or have not explored how they can positively impact their profession, they tend to struggle. The first step we suggest to professionals who want to take things to the next level is to clarify their purpose and define their clinical focus.

The docs who are getting real traction with their personal and professional brands know their purpose and focus their time on activities that impact patients and peers in a positive way.

What approach or approaches do you recommend not only to increase patient volume, but to drive the right types of patients to practices?
The most successful doctors we work with all follow a similar path. They identify their passion and know where their skillset is. Once they establish who they are, what they are great at, and who they can help, they start marketing. The first step in effective communication is to create an authentic message that resonates. Next, find a way to consistently connect with patients, prospective patients & peers.

Effective marketing can be deceptively simple. Our client Don Nikchevich is a very successful implant surgeon. He got where is by relentlessly focusing on perfecting the art of implantology and sharing his experience with patients and peers. Whether it is in the clinic, on his website or in a CE course that he is giving, Don is ALWAYS on message. He is all about implants all of the time.

There is one simple question an implant surgeon like Don in private practice needs to be constantly asking: How do we educate prospective patients and peers on what sets a specialized surgeon apart from a general practitioner or an implant "chainstore"?

Finding personalized answers to that question will help the doc develop a message that resonates with patients (and peers) who will appreciate what they're trying to do. A good message always puts the focus on the patient.

As media choices continue to proliferate, it's more important than ever for docs to deliver their message wherever prospects want to find it. Patients and peers who want to learn about you through social media need to experience your social presence in a way that is comfortable and familiar to them. If they land on your website, they want site content that's intuitive to access and easy to digest.

Every doc I talk to wants more of the "right" kind of patients. Our clients who have achieved that goal have been willing to do the work to identify those patients, develop messages that resonate with them and post those messages everywhere their patients want them to be.

As we're seeing a movement toward more "next wave" dentistry and orthodontics, particularly around airway health, what are some unique ways practitioners can engage and educate their audiences?
There are two approaches we're seeing in this space.

First is sub-branding within existing practices. We have a number of clients, particularly in the pediatric space, who are establishing separate centers (inside of the general practice) that are focused on tongue/lip tie, facial growth guidance & airway.

Second is creating 2 separate brands under the umbrella of a personal brand. Lauren Ballinger is a great example of this with Good to Grow Pediatric Dental & The Nurture Frenectomy Center. Lauren, who co-founded The Endeavor Group, is also establishing herself as an industry leader nationally and locally through service work and specialized branding.

Moms looking for a pediatric dentist (specialist), who has a lot of experience in tongue ties and facial development (specialist specialty) seek out Lauren. Families with kids who have early childhood development challenges are traveling significant distances to see her.

Lauren and other specialists like her are pioneering an approach to personal and professional branding that's built on a foundation of clinical experience, academic commitment, and mentorship.

Equally important, they are very passionate about airway health and early childhood development. These dentists are connecting with mothers and patients in a way that dentists never have before.

They are demonstrating an intuitive understanding of a child's physiology. They are employing unique diagnostic processes that expose conditions that haven't been spotted before.

The result is clinical outcomes that, in many cases, are far exceeding expectations.

In my experience, when it comes to growing a practice, there is no marking campaign that will ever outperform exceeding patient expectations.

There are two ways to engage in Search Engine Marketing (SEO)
The first is Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising – paying the search engines for the opportunity to advertise for certain keywords. PPC advertising is an auction, so multiple parties are competing for placement for those keywords. When performed well, PPC advertising is an incredibly effective way to connect with new patients. When performed poorly, it can result in a lot of wasted money. Proper bid strategies will ensure the results the practice is looking for.

The second way to compete on the search engines is through a process called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This entails tailoring the practice's website towards targeted keywords so that the site will rank highly organically (without paying for advertising). This process is time-intensive and takes months or years to yield results but is incredibly impactful once the site ranks highly.
